World Day Against Child Labour 2010
The World Day Against Child Labour is celebrated on 12 June and aims to promote awareness within every country on the negative aspects of child labour for society as a whole, and of the need to put an end to it as soon as possible on a global scale. The elimination of child labour is at the core of the fight against poverty and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), especially MDG 2 which seeks to ensure universally accessible, free, and compulsory education.
A goal to reach 12 June this year recalls the target set by member States of the International Labour Organization to eliminate the worst forms of child labour by 2016. This goal will not be reached without enhanced efforts on all sides. Local, national, and global efforts must be intensified so that measures to tackle child labour are fully integrated into strategies related to poverty reduction, social protection, educational planning, and the promotion of human rights. This objective can only be achieved through raising awareness and taking action against child labour by engaging governments, workers', and employers’ organizations, civil society, and youth in particular, all of whom play a leading role.
A worldwide movement Each June 12, awareness raising activities and events are organized all around the world. The United Nations, numerous local, regional, and national governments, trade unions and employers’ organizations, universities and NGOs actively participate in this World Day, with growing support every year. Everyone who can take action to eliminate child labour, and many of us can, are thus called upon to join forces on 12 June in order to remind the world that child labour is not inevitable; it can, and must, be abolished.
